Christmas brings joy across India. But it also brings public holidays, service closures and changes in schedules. Many people plan errands, banking or important tasks around this festive day. However, December 25, 2025, could be tricky for errands because several key services will be shut down or limited.

Christmas Day 2025: Banks Closed Across the Country?

In India, banks follow a holiday list decided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This list includes festival and state-specific closures. On December 25, 2025 (Christmas Day), all private and public banks across India will remain closed. Customers will not be able to visit branches for counter services, cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearances or passbook updates.

Before Christmas, some states may already observe holiday closures on December 24 (Christmas Eve). In Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya, banks will remain shut on the eve as well.  Even on a bank holiday, digital services like UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs will work normally.

Christmas Day 2025: Government Offices & Schools Closed?

Most government offices, courts and municipal services will observe Christmas as a holiday, except for emergency work.

Schools and colleges in many states, including Kerala, Goa, Delhi and parts of the Northeast will likely stay closed either for Christmas or for the winter holidays.

Christmas Day 2025: Post Offices to be Closed?

India Post offices will be closed on December 25, 2025, in observance of Christmas Day as a public holiday. Physical mail delivery and counter services will not operate on that day.

That means you should avoid planning parcel shipments, registered mail or speed post services for Christmas Day itself. The next working day should see postal operations resume.

Christmas Day 2025: Stock Markets Shut Down on Christmas?

Indian stock markets will also pause operations on Christmas Day. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for trading on December 25, affecting equity, derivatives and commodity sessions. Investors should plan trades ahead of time and be aware that markets will reopen on the next working day.

Christmas Day 2025: What Remains Open?

While institutional closures are significant, several services continue operations on Christmas Day:

  • Hospitals, clinics and emergency medical services remain open.
  • Transport services, including local trains, buses and metros, may operate on holiday schedules.
  • Ride-hailing apps (Ola, Uber) and food delivery services usually run throughout the day, though availability may vary.
  • Digital payments and online marketplaces continue without disruption.

Balancing Holiday Spirit With Practical Tasks

In India, Christmas is both a religious celebration and a regional holiday in many states. However, it is not a nationwide “no work” day like Republic Day or Independence Day.

This means that while banks and post offices shut down, many people still work, travel or celebrate without major disruption. Businesses, residential areas and city centres buzz with festivals, dinners, church services and family events.

For those with errands or urgent financial tasks, the best advice is plan early — complete bank visits and postal work before December 25. With stock markets closed and services paused, last-minute tasks will likely face delays.
