A wedding celebration turned into a scene reminiscent of a Bollywood drama when the groom’s kiss during the ‘jai mala’ ceremony sparked chaos, with slaps, punches, and an all-out brawl breaking out. The ‘mandap’ quickly transformed into a battleground, with some attendees using sticks and batons to settle scores.
Videos of the commotion quickly spread across social media, making the event a viral sensation. “In the dead of night, around 1:30 AM, a call came in, summoning police,” said Hapur ASP Rajkumar Agrawal. Nearly a dozen individuals were detained and booked under CrPC 151 (arrest to prevent commission of cognisable offences). Five people were hospitalized with injuries before being discharged, although no official complaints were filed with the police.
Agrawal added, “The marriage ceremony of two sisters was being performed in the Ashok Nagar area of Hapur. While the elder sister’s marriage was peacefully conducted, a conflict was ignited when the younger sister’s groom kissed her on stage.”
Despite the families calling off the wedding amidst the chaos, the bride and groom remained determined to marry. Elders intervened and initiated discussions, expressing the intention to reschedule the wedding for a later date, which has yet to be decided.
