BJP Government’s Oath-Taking in Delhi Likely Delayed Until PM Modi Returns from US: Sources

The swearing-in of the new BJP-led government in Delhi is unlikely to happen before February 15, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on an official visit to the United States, top party sources revealed on Sunday.
PM Modi is set to visit the US on February 12 and 13, making him one of the first world leaders to travel to Washington, D.C., following Donald Trump’s second-term inauguration.

According to sources, the BJP is planning a grand oath-taking ceremony with invitations expected to be extended to top NDA leaders and Chief Ministers.

BJP’s Historic Win in Delhi

After 27 years, the BJP came back with a bang in Delhi, winning 48 out of 70 seats in the Assembly elections. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had won 62 seats in 2020, witnessed its tally shrink to just 22 in the 2025 polls.

Throughout its campaign, the BJP copied its earlier state election strategy of not declaring a Chief Ministerial candidate prior to the election. Now that it has won, the party is likely to begin internal discussions on who is going to lead the Delhi government soon.

Who Will Be Delhi CM?

There are several names doing the rounds as contenders for the post of Chief Minister.

Parvesh Verma: One of the top contenders, Verma grabbed the headlines by winning over AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, ending his winning streak.

Bansuri Swaraj: The daughter of veteran BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, she is a first-time MP and currently represents the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat. This seat has previously been held by prominent BJP figures such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani.

Smriti Irani: A prominent BJP leader, she is also in the running for the position. She came into the limelight by defeating Rahul Gandhi in Amethi during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, though she lost her seat in the 2024 general elections. She was an active campaigner for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections.

With PM Modi’s return awaited, the BJP leadership is expected to finalize its choice for Delhi’s next Chief Minister in the coming days.
