Festive season is here—Dussehra kicks off a month packed with celebrations and holidays. But before you get caught up in the fun, remember, banks in India will be shut for 15 days this October, as per RBI’s schedule.

These holidays are in addition to the weekly closures on all Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. To save you the trouble, here’s a complete state-wise list of bank holidays in October 2025.

What Are the Major Nationwide Bank Holidays?

While many holidays are region-specific, a few key dates will see banks shut across the entire country. Gandhi Jayanti, which falls on Thursday, October 2, is the most important national holiday. To commemorate the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, all banks will be closed on this day.

Additionally, the festive period of Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on October 1, Wednesday, will lead to widespread closures in numerous states, including Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, effectively making it a pan-India closure for a vast majority of locations.

Which Regional Holidays Will Affect Bank Operations?

In addition to the big festivities, banks in several states will close for a number of regional celebrations. Important dates to remember are:

October 3 & 4: Dasain/Durga Puja in Gangtok.

October 6: Lakshmi Puja in Agartala.

October 7: Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti in Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar.

October 10: Karva Chauth in Shimla.

October 18: Kati Bihu in Guwahati.

When Are the Diwali-Chath Puja Related Bank Holidays?

The festival of lights, Diwali, creates a string of bank holidays across different states. The majority of major cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru, will have their banks closed on Monday, October 20, the primary day of Diwali.

The celebrations continue with subsequent days also declared as holidays in various regions:

October 21, Tuesday: Banks closed in Belapur, Bhopal, Jammu, Srinagar, and others.

October 22, Wednesday: Closed for Bali Pratipada and Govardhan Pooja in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.

October 23, Thursday: Closed for Bhai Dooj in cities including Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Shimla.

October 27 & 28: Chath Puja in Patna, Ranchi, and Kolkata.
