The University of Western Australia’s decision to invest Rs 500 crore in India represents the turning point in international education partnerships. With the approval by the University Grants Commission, UWA will construct its campuses in Chennai and Mumbai to bring world-class learning closer to Indian students.
This defines the deepening academic with economic partnership between India and Australia at a point in history when demand in higher education seems to be on the rise across the world.
What is UWA’s Vision for India
UWA is part of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight and constantly ranked among the world’s top universities, along with plans for offering a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
The focus will lie in STEM fields, business studies and commerce areas of strong industry demand as perceived by both nations. It is expected that the university will accommodate about 600 students during the first intake when classes start in August 2026.

Investment & Expansion Plans
More than 90 percent of UWA’s $55 million funding will go toward India-based operations including faculty recruitment, academic leadership roles, infrastructure and leasing existing private properties.
Over time, the university plans to expand enrollment to 5,000–6,000 students within five years and possibly twice that within ten years. UWA will also look to recruit students from South Asia and Africa and aim for close to 30 percent international enrollment between the two campuses.
Why Australia Chooses India?
UWA’s leadership acknowledges a simple reality: many Indian students aspire to study abroad but cannot afford the costs of travel, accommodation, and international tuition. At the same time, Australia hosts a limited capacity for foreign students.

Establishing campuses in India allows UWA to create opportunities for Australian quality education at a fee level comparable to what domestic students would pay in Australia, opening up global education access without compromising on quality.
Partnerships & Further Collaboration
The university is actively forging partnerships with leading Indian institutions such as IITs, IIMs and major private universities. A highlight has been its collaboration with HCLTech in providing global micro-credentials in AI, cybersecurity, digital engineering and tech leadership.
The course will align students with real-world challenges through a joint Indo-Pacific hackathon with the Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce and MEITY.
