Air India Hiring Pilots for A320 & B737 Fleet While IndiGo Battles Crew Shortage | Know the Details

With IndiGo cancelling thousands of flights and leaving dozens of airports in chaos this December, Air India has moved quickly — opening a wide-ranging pilot recruitment drive to fill command roles on its A320 and B737 fleets. The airline posted on social media: “The sky isn’t the limit, it’s just the beginning.” For many pilots and frequent flyers hit by the disruptions, this may offer hope of both steady jobs and smoother travel.

The timing is strategic: IndiGo’s staffing shortfall after new duty-limit rules threw its network into turbulence. As one major airline stumbles, another is expanding — and that shift is already making waves.

Air India Hiring: Details of the Pilot Drive

Air India is looking for experienced captains for its narrow-body jets. The Boeing B737 fleet invites both type-rated and non-type-rated pilots. For the Airbus A320, the airline prefers type-rated pilots with command experience. The upper age limit is 62 years for captains.

This includes qualified candidates with diverse flying backgrounds, from commercial jets to military experience, provided they meet the required hours and certifications.

Why This Move Matters: India’s Pilot Shortage and Regulatory Shock

The drive is unfolding against the backdrop of sweeping regulatory changes. From November 1, the updated pilot duty and rest-time norms from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) came into effect. Many airlines needed time to adjust — but IndiGo reportedly failed to recruit enough crew even after more than a year of notice, triggering severe staff shortages.

Pilot-union bodies accused IndiGo of a “hiring freeze” and negligent manpower planning, calling the move “an unorthodox lean-staff strategy.”

In contrast, Air India appears to be preparing for long-term growth. The airline also inaugurated a new pilot-training centre in Gurugram this year, in partnership with Airbus — further signalling its ambition to expand capacity and tap into India’s growing demand for air travel.

What This Means for Travellers, Pilots, and the Industry

For stranded passengers: this move may ease pressure on flight availability and reduce delays — especially on domestic short-haul routes.  For pilots: Air India’s open call represents fresh career opportunities, offering better job security compared to uncertain times at IndiGo.

For the aviation sector: this may signal a structural shift — airlines that planned may benefit, while those depending on lean staffing risk future disruptions. The contrast between IndiGo’s crisis and Air India’s hiring surge underlines how critical long-term manpower planning has become in India’s rapidly expanding aviation market.
