Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 5 (ANI): Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam reiterated the BJP’s demand on Sunday to register a case of “culpable homicide” against those responsible for the death of a man who fell into a manhole in Sakinaka on Friday.
Speaking to ANI, Satam highlighted the “insensitive” nature of the administration. He noted that Harish Bhandirge, Chairperson of BMC’s Public Health Committee, had written two letters to the concerned ward officer identifying specific locations where tree trimming was required, followed by a reminder on July 1.
Earlier on Friday, BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde took a stern stand against the civic officials, demanding the immediate suspension of the Ward Officer and suggesting that charges of “culpable homicide” be filed against those responsible in the Sakinaka manhole tragedy.
“Our Health Committee Chairman, Harish Bhandirge, wrote two letters to the concerned ward officer identifying specific locations where tree trimming was required; a reminder was also sent on July 1. Despite this, the administration remains insensitive… We now demand that the administration register a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against them,” said Satam.
Aslam Isak Shaikh, 55, fell into an open manhole in the Sakinaka area of Andheri East during heavy rainfall on Friday. Police have since registered a case against the contractor and the workers engaged in drainage repair work in connection with the incident.
In addition to this fatality, a 63-year-old man died after a tree fell on a shop in Kurla amid gusty winds and heavy rainfall, marking another rain-related tragedy in the city. The deceased, identified as Yunus Kundawala, was rushed to Fauzia Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
According to civic authorities, the incident was reported at approximately 12:40 pm near the Hindi BMC School at the Gomes Gown Building in Kamani, Kurla (West). The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), police, BEST personnel, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staff were rushed to the site to carry out rescue and clearance operations.
According to the BMC, Mumbai recorded over 265 mm of rainfall in the city and over 227 mm in the suburbs during the 24-hour period ending at 6 pm on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Satam also slammed UBT Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray over his recent remarks criticising the BJP during the Ram Raksha protest rally.
Satam stressed that the former Maharashtra Chief Minister had abandoned the Hindutva ideology championed by Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray to ally with the Congress. He added that Maharashtra witnessed an “unprecedented” political scenario where a sitting CM was ousted by his own party MLAs.
“By abandoning the Hindutva ideology championed by Balasaheb Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray allied with the Congress. He forgot Lord Ram, and because of that, his own MLAs ousted him from his own party. Maharashtra is witnessing an unprecedented political scenario: a sitting Chief Minister being ousted from his party by 90% of his own MLAs. This is what happened to Uddhav Thackeray,” Satam stated.
