Students at IIT Roorkee expressed their anger through protests on October 17 after disturbing images and videos emerged, revealing a severe rat infestation in the kitchen of Radhakrishna Bhawan’s mess. The footage, which quickly gained traction on social media, depicted rats scurrying over cooking utensils, including pans and rice. Additionally, contaminated sprouts were found carelessly scattered in the drains, raising serious health concerns among the student body.
In response to the alarming situation, the Food Safety Department has initiated an investigation and collected food samples from the mess for analysis. As unsanitary conditions persisted, the department issued a notice to the mess operator. Reports indicate that approximately 400 students have resorted to eating outside food due to concerns over food safety and hygiene.

The IIT Roorkee protests intensified after a student discovered rats inside cooking utensils and reported that the same contaminated sprouts, after being washed, were served for breakfast the following morning. Frustrated with the administration’s response, students demanded a temporary shift to another mess until appropriate measures were taken to ensure their safety. However, they were met with indifference, as officials claimed the utensils had been “cleaned” and encouraged them to proceed with lunch.
