IIT Dhanbad professor drowns while swimming in pool

A professor at IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, tragically drowned while taking a bath in the swimming pool on Tuesday. Dr. Yashwant Gujala, an Assistant Professor at IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, went for a bath with his friends in the campus swimming pool in the morning when the incident occurred. The unfortunate event took place during his regular swimming session with friends in the M3 area swimming pool on the IIT-ISM campus. Despite immediate rescue efforts and prompt medical intervention, Professor Ujala could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
An official stated that Dr. Yashwant Gujala, aged 40, would regularly participate in swimming sessions with his friends in the campus pool. Yesterday, while attempting a dive from above into the pool, he encountered difficulties and did not resurface for a significant amount of time. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, his friends courageously entered the pool to rescue him, only to find him unconscious.
They immediately initiated rescue measures and brought him out of the water. He was swiftly transported to the health center at IIT-ISM Dhanbad and subsequently transferred to Shaheed Nirmal Mahato Medical College (SNMMC) in Dhanbad for specialized medical treatment, where he was declared dead.
Director Rajeev Shekhar and Deputy Director Prof. Dhiraj Kumar of IIT Dhanbad reached the scene following the accident. They have informed the relatives of Dr. Yashwant about the tragic incident. The victim hails from Odisha, and his family resides in Kharagpur, West Bengal.
Meanwhile, two programmes scheduled for Tuesday at IIT(ISM), Dhanbad, were postponed after the tragedy. Union Minister of State for Education Annapurna Devi was to inaugurate a multipurpose building at IIT ISM and the Jharkhand School Innovation Challenge.
