Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Paris on Sunday to show support for women’s rights and the opposition movement in Iran. This rally comes two years after the tragic death of Mahsa Amini, which sparked global protests against Iran’s strict religious laws.
The Tragic Death of Mahsa Amini
Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, was arrested in September 2022 for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women. She died in custody, and her death ignited a wave of protests across the country. The movement, led by women, demanded freedom from oppressive laws and restrictions.
Hunger Strike in Tehran Prison
To mark the two-year anniversary of Amini’s death, 34 women began a hunger strike in a Tehran prison, a powerful act of resistance against Iran’s authoritarian regime. The rally in Paris coincided with this strike, amplifying their message of solidarity.
Voices of Activists: A Fight Not in Vain
Chirinne Ardakani, a Franco-Iranian lawyer and member of the “Iran Justice” collective, spoke at the rally. She emphasized that the “sacrifices” made by Iranians opposing the regime were not in vain. Ardakani stated, “Everything has changed in Iran. We’ve moved from a patriarchal culture to massive support for these women.”
Solidarity from Former Detainees
The Paris march was also attended by Benjamin Briere and Louis Arnaud, two French nationals who had been imprisoned in Iran. Arnaud, in his first public speech since his release, expressed his deep gratitude: “It is an immense honour to have been able to live among freedom fighters who shared my suffering.”
Iran’s Use of Hostages
Iran has been accused of arresting Westerners without cause and using them as leverage in diplomatic negotiations. While Briere and Arnaud have been released, three other French nationals remain imprisoned in Iran, continuing the fight for their freedom.
Crushed Protests and Continued Struggle
After Amini’s death in September 2022, protests led by women erupted across Iran, shaking the government’s foundation. However, authorities responded with extreme violence. Human rights groups report that at least 551 people were killed and thousands more arrested. Despite the crackdown, the movement continues, fueled by the unwavering spirit of those demanding justice.
