The Directors Guild of America has nominated All We Imagine As Light for the 2025 awards in the first-time director category. The revelation follows Payal Kapadia’s narrow loss a few days earlier at the Golden Globes for Best Director – Motion Picture, when Brady Corbet won for The Brutalist.
The DGA, one of the major unions representing film and television directors in the U.S. and abroad, featured Kapadia’s work as part of its line-up of first-time nominees that also included Megan Park (My Old Ass), RaMell Ross (Nickel Boys), Halfdan Ullmann Tondel (Armand), and Sean Wang (Didi), according to Variety.
In 2024, Kapadia won the prized Grand Prix Cannes for his first feature film, All We Imagine As Light, which is very well appreciated. Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam all do exemplary work in this film that chronicles loneliness, love, and desire from the point of views of three women: Prabha and Anu, two Malayali nurses, and their companion Parvati.
An FTII alumnus, Kapadia has already garnered international recognition with her documentary film A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021) and short film Afternoon Clouds (2017). Her status as one of the important voices in new cinema is established with All We Imagine As Light.
