Heavy rainfall has resulted in a massive landslide on National Highway-6, a vital link connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country, according to officials on Friday. The incident occurred in the Hunthar area, situated on the western outskirts of Aizawl.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of any casualties thus far. Authorities are presently working to clear the debris that has obstructed the national highway.
Mizoram has been experiencing incessant rainfall for the past few days, leading to numerous landslides across the state.
Rajasthan’s Jalore and Barmer districts prepare for heavy rainfall due to cyclone Biparjoy
Jalore and Barmer districts in Rajasthan have witnessed heavy rain as Cyclone Biparjoy, after making landfall in Gujarat, has moved towards the desert state, officials reported on Friday. A meteorological department official revealed that 60-70 mm of rain was recorded at certain locations on Thursday night, with expectations of extremely heavy rainfall in both districts and the surrounding areas on Friday.
As of Friday morning, Jalore had already received 69 mm of rainfall. The meteorological department has issued a “red” alert for Jalore and Barmer, indicating the potential for over 200 mm of rainfall in these areas.
The cyclone is expected to weaken as it progresses over Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Pali, and Sirohi, where very heavy rainfall is likely. Additionally, heavy rains are anticipated in Rajsamand, Dungarpur, and nearby regions on Friday and Saturday.
Strong winds, reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, are expected in the vicinity of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jalore, and Jodhpur on Friday. On Saturday, similar conditions are expected in the areas around Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Ajmer.
To aid those affected by the heavy rains, eight companies of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in various locations, including Jaipur, Kota, Bharatpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner. Additionally, one company of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Kishangarh, Ajmer district.
Local authorities in the affected districts have made necessary preparations, such as arranging pumps and deploying civil defence and disaster management teams, in response to the “red” and “orange” alerts.
Delhi receives fresh rainfall as cyclone Biparjoy impacts North India
Delhi experienced a fresh spell of rain on Friday, influenced by Cyclone Biparjoy and a western disturbance active over the northwest Himalayan region, as stated by the weather office. Biparjoy, which had been moving across the Arabian Sea for over 10 days, made landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat on Thursday.
In the past 24 hours, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.9 degrees Celsius on Friday, with the maximum temperature expected to reach around 38 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was measured at 108, categorising it as “moderate,” according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).
