The winter wonderland of Gulmarg has come alive with the exhilarating festivities of the Khelo India Winter Games, marking a spectacular showcase of talent and sportsmanship amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the region.
As the 2nd Phase of the 4th Khelo India Winter Games commenced, the stage was set for a series of thrilling competitions that unfolded against the backdrop of the serene night.
Under the careful coordination of the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council and allied departments, the first day witnessed two electrifying events of Nordic Skiing, one each for men and women categories.
The Nordic Women Skiing Sprint covering a distance of 1.6 KM kicked off at the Golf Club, witnessing the spirited participation of twenty athletes representing different states and organizations. Bhavani Thekkada from Karnataka emerged victorious in this event, with Selma Soreng and Sapna of ITBP securing the second and third positions respectively.
In the Nordic Men’s Sprint spanning 10 KM, thirty-three players showcased their prowess, with the Army dominating the leaderboard. Padma Namgail secured the first position, followed by Mangeet and Rameez Ahmad Paddar clinching the second and third positions respectively. Amidst the competitive fervor, players demonstrated exceptional skill and determination as they navigated the challenging terrain with finesse and determination.
Geeta Thakur, a Snowboarding coach representing ITBP, expressed optimism about the event, highlighting Gulmarg’s unique potential in nurturing young talent for prestigious events like the Olympics. She commended the efforts of the J&K Sports Council in providing top-notch facilities and arrangements for the participants.
Rajesh Thakur, a seasoned participant in the Khelo India Winter Games, shared his excitement about the improved snow conditions and pleasant weather, expressing gratitude to the governments for enhancing facilities across destinations.
Joginder Kumar from Haryana emphasized the transformative impact of the Khelo India Winter Games in fostering national unity and providing vast opportunities for young athletes to excel on the international stage.
The event commenced amidst traditional local cultural presentations, adding a touch of authenticity and vibrancy to the festivities. The Snow Leopard Mascot, symbolizing agility and strength, enthralled spectators with choreographed moves, embodying the spirit of the Khelo India Winter Games.
