On June 29, 2008, Thomas Beatie became the first married man to give birth in Bend, Oregon, USA. This incredible event was a major moment in the discussion around transgender rights and family creation.

Thomas Beatie: Making History as a Mother

Thomas was born female and had gender confirmation surgery in 2002, but he opted to retain his female reproductive organs. He did this because he always knew he wanted to have children.

Thomas married his first wife, Nancy, in 2003. Because Thomas had retained the ability to carry a child, the couple decided he would be the one to get pregnant. They conceived with sperm from an anonymous donor.

Thomas successfully carried and delivered their first child in 2008. That wasn’t the end, however. The couple would go on to have three children together, each one carried by and delivered by Thomas.

Thomas Beatie: A Unique Genetic Link

Years later, Thomas and Nancy separated. Then, Thomas married Amber Nichols. In 2018, their family grew again after Amber gave birth to the couple’s first child together.

In an interesting family history twist, Thomas and Amber used the same sperm donor that Thomas had used to conceive his first three children. This means all four of Thomas’s children share the same genetic father.

The story of Thomas Beatie is one of inspiration, as it shows how love and determination can overcome conventional barriers in creating a family.

By keeping his reproductive organs, he opened the way to a deeper understanding of what being a parent may mean and proved that even a man is capable of the miracle of pregnancy and birth. His story actually epitomizes the fact that family goes by love and commitment, not just biology.
