Since The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 started to air weekly on Amazon Prime Video, social media has been filled with responses to the developing story. Although the series continues to maintain good viewership numbers, Conrad Fisher’s (Christopher Briney), Jeremiah Fisher’s (Gavin Casalegno), and Belly’s (Lola Tung) love triangle has once more split fans.

Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah were trending on X (previously Twitter), but in recent episodes, Jeremiah has been put on blast for the way he handled Belly. Even through a dramatic rollercoaster of a battle, of making up, of getting engaged, and now wedding preparations, fans have been disappointed with Jeremiah’s storyline taking such an undesirable turn. This tide of criticism has prompted Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, to speak out about the negativity towards his character.

Gavin Casalegno Responds

In an interview with The New York Times, Casalegno said he knows about the criticism but refuses to internalize it.

“They disapprove of him, yeah. I don’t browse Instagram anymore, so I actually haven’t seen that much hate. The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are actually really funny. I think that it is also important to understand and realize that this is a made-up story — and it’s also not me,” he told us.

Casalegno continued to contemplate the virulence of fan responses: “I don’t think there’s a single human being on the planet who can take the emotional negativity to the level that stuff like this occurs. And I think that’s why Amazon did a good thing stepping in and being like, ‘Hey, no bullying.’ Though, not really doing so well.”

Audience Reaction to the Storyline

The most recent episodes have done little to settle the fan debate. Conrad confronted Belly in the latest episode, urging her to reconsider marrying Jeremiah. Belly turned down Conrad’s plea and stood firm on her decision, which left Conrad alone.

This highly charged confrontation brought a flood of reactions online. Viewers showed Conrad sympathy for his heartbreak, vowing that he “deserves better,” while others defended Jeremiah and Belly’s relationship in spite of the drama.

What’s Next for Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad?

The ongoing saga in Season 3 has made sure that The Summer I Turned Pretty is still a cultural conversation piece, with fandoms fiercely advocating for their beloved characters. With 11 episodes for the season, expectations are high as to how the story will wind down.

The last episode will be out on September 17 on Amazon Prime Video, where viewers will get to see if Jeremiah and Belly’s wedding will proceed or whether Conrad’s confession will turn the tables.
