Sreenivasan had a strong academic background in economics along with formal training in filmmaking. He completed his schooling at Kuthuparamba Middle School and Government High School, Kadirur. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Pazhassi Raja N.S.S. College, Mattanur, affiliated with the University of Calicut at the time.

In 1977, he joined the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu (M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute) in Chennai, where he completed a diploma in film acting and studied with now a superstar Rajinikanth.
