Gautam Gambhir, a former cricketer representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), currently serves as the Member of Parliament for the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. East Delhi holds immense significance among Delhi’s seven parliamentary seats and is one of the largest and most populous constituencies in India. Situated along the eastern bank of the Yamuna River, it is home to a substantial population.
Over the years, the East Delhi constituency has witnessed notable transformations. Initially comprising areas such as Patparganj, Mandawali-Fazalpur, Hasanpur, and Samaspur villages, it now includes a mix of unauthorized and upscale colonies. The constituency has attracted a large number of migrants from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, who have settled here.
In terms of its political history, Sandeep Dikshit of the Congress party was elected as the Member of Parliament in 2009, followed by Mahesh Giri of the BJP in 2014. Gautam Gambhir secured victory in the 2019 elections, continuing his tenure as the current representative.
The East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency comprises 10 legislative assembly seats, namely Krishna Nagar, Shahdara, Okhla, Gandhi Nagar, Jangpura, Trilokpuri, Kondli, Patparganj, Laxmi Nagar, and Vishwas Nagar. This diverse constituency represents a significant population and plays a vital role in shaping the political landscape of Delhi.
