Female inmates at Aligarh Jail are busy creating colorful, designer diyas (oil lamps) for Diwali. These handmade diyas will be sold outside the jail, giving inmates a chance to earn income.

Over 20,000 Diyas Produced

Prison Superintendent Brijendra Singh Yadav stated that inmates have made more than 20,000 diyas. This project is part of the Self-Reliant India and Skill Development programs, which aim to empower inmates with vocational skills and economic opportunities.

The Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, in 2020. The scheme promotes Indian products globally and aims for economic self-sufficiency. It helps India enter international supply chains, boost exports, and support local production.

Inmates Benefit Directly

Proceeds from diya sales will go directly to the inmates. This supports their financial independence. “Female inmates are crafting designer diyas, while male inmates are making electric ones. About 20,000 diyas are complete, and packaging is finished,” said Yadav.

Affordable Diya Pricing

The small diyas cost ₹2, and the larger ones are ₹10. These will be sold to the public.

“This project aims to empower women under the Self-Reliant India scheme,” Yadav added.

Showcasing Efforts on the Namami Gange App

Photos and videos of inmates working on the diyas will be posted on the Namami Gange app. This feature will highlight their skills and showcase the impact of the Self-Reliant India program on their lives.
