The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its first chargesheet on Friday regarding alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The chargesheet, over 120 pages long, was submitted to the special CBI court in Alipore and names five individuals, including Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college.

The investigation was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court in August, which directed the agency to probe both the August 9 rape and murder of a trainee doctor, and allegations of financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure starting in 2021.

The CBI filed charges against Ghosh and three companies—Ma Tara Traders, Eshan Café, and Khama Louha—on August 24, under the same sections as the FIR registered by Kolkata police. Ghosh and three others—Biplav Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan—were arrested by the CBI on September 2. Singha and Hazra, who were vendors allegedly linked to Ghosh, and Khan, Ghosh’s bodyguard, were taken into custody. Later, Ashish Pandey, a house staff member at RG Kar Hospital, was arrested for his involvement in the financial irregularities.

Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a money laundering investigation related to the case.

The CBI had already filed charges in the rape and murder case on October 7, naming Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, as the prime accused in the tragic incident, which sparked nationwide outrage.
