Ukraine has intensified its counteroffensive in Russia’s Kursk region, targeting key locations and warning Moscow of retribution. Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, announced that Ukrainian forces have conducted surprise attacks on Russian troops in various areas within Kursk. This follows Ukraine’s initial incursion into the region in August.
In a Telegram post, Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, said, “Kursk region, good news. Russia is getting what it deserves.”
Tensions Escalate on Both Sides
The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that Ukrainian forces launched counterattacks near the Berdin village, about 15 kilometers from the border. It stated that Russian airpower repelled the offensive, which involved tanks and armored vehicles. Battles have intensified in the Sudzha district, with small-arms clashes, artillery bombardments, and drone activity reported.
A Russian military blog noted, “The enemy has thrown reserves into the offensive in the Kursk region, using powerful radio-electronic warfare systems to disrupt our UAVs.”
Heavy Losses Reported
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, battles near Makhnovka village led to significant losses for Russian and North Korean forces, with up to a battalion of soldiers reportedly killed. A battalion typically consists of several hundred troops.
Humanitarian Impact
Colonel Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi, a Ukrainian military spokesperson, reported severe damage and casualties in Sudzha town due to Russian bombardment. Missiles and drones have caused widespread destruction, killing at least 39 people and wounding over 100. Approximately 2,000 civilians are trapped in the area, many seeking evacuation without Russian approval.
International Reactions and Strategic Implications
The deployment of 11,000 North Korean troops by Russia in the Kursk region has raised concerns among international observers. Ukrainian forces continue to hold territory gained during the August incursion, despite persistent Russian attempts to reclaim it.
Ongoing Battles
The conflict in the Kursk region remains fluid, with both sides experiencing heavy losses. Ukraine has vowed to continue its counteroffensive, signaling its determination to push further into Russian-held territory.
