POK: Protests in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan Police Uses Tear Gas

Massive demonstrations erupted in Dadyal tehsil of Mirpur district, Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) on May 10. Citizens are demanding tax-free electricity from Mangla Dam and subsidies on wheat flour. Protests were brought forward after the deployment of additional security forces sparking their outrage against the force. Protesters engaged in clashes with security personnel, reportedly resorting to stone-throwing. The local administration imposed Section 144 in the area, as reported by ANI.

The Dawn, says 70 activists were arrested to stop a big protest. Things got worse when police used tear gas, accidentally hurting girls at a nearby school. Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a prominent figure in the movement, escaped arrest and emerged as a leading voice, addressing gatherings across the town, and encouraging the people to participate in the strike as a symbol of freedom. “Put any tag on us, but as long as God is with us, you cannot harm us. Let us live in peace. If you raid people’s houses again and arrest them, there will be no peace. I am saying this openly,” said Shaukat Nawaz Mir in his address.

The ongoing protest is happening in the capital of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Muzaffarabad on May 11.
