Indonesia Relocates 10,000 People in Wake of Volcano Eruption

In light of the recent volcanic eruption, Indonesia has decided to permanently relocate 10,000 residents of North Sulawesi due to concerns about potential future eruptions and the resulting damage they could cause.

Currently, about 9800 people reside on Ruang island, but due to recent volcanic eruption, all the residents have been evacuated after the mountain continued to throw lava and columns of ash into the sky.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency until May 14 due to potential tsunami if the volcano’s parts collapse from eruptions. Further, the authorities have also closed several nearby airports, resulting in flight cancellations.

As revealed by Indonesia’s coordinating human development minister Muhadjir Effendy on Friday, the homes for evacuee will be built in Bolaang Mongondow area.

According to President Joko Widodo’s instructions, these houses will be built to meet disaster standards. As the site is situated about 200km from Ruang island.
