Sholay is a legendary 1975 Indian epic action-adventure film directed by Ramesh Sippy, produced by his father G. P. Sippy, and ranks as one of the greatest creations in Bollywood history.
Penned by the great duo Salim–Javed, the movie tells the riveting tale of two petty thieves, Veeru and Jai, who get hired by a former police officer, Thakur Baldev Singh, to capture one of the most dreaded dacoits, Gabbar Singh. A major portion of Sholay was filmed in the rugged rocky landscape of Ramanagara, near Bangalore, Karnataka. The production team even built a special road from the Bangalore highway to the filming site for smoother access.
Art director Ram Yedekar created an entire township in Ramanagara for the shoot, while an outdoor prison set was constructed near Rajkamal Studios in Bombay to match the natural lighting of the real locations.
One area of Ramanagara was even nicknamed “Sippy Nagar” as a tribute to director Ramesh Sippy. As of 2010, tourists visiting Ramanagara could still explore the famous “Sholay rocks,” where many iconic scenes were shot.
