Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit’s relationship became one of Bollywood’s biggest stories in the 1990s. It unfolded at a time when Dutt was coping with personal tragedy and career revival. While he navigated his wife Richa Sharma’s illness and a troubled marriage, his on-screen pairing with Madhuri sparked intense rumors. Sanjay Dutt’s life began in the shadow of greatness his parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis, were legendary film stars. Yet, his childhood saw hardship. Nargis battled cancer for years, which left deep emotional scars. Sanjay soon slipped into addiction, struggling through most of his early adult life.

Richa’s illness and a troubled marriage

By the late ’80s, Sanjay’s film career had started to rise. But life threw him another blow—his wife Richa Sharma was diagnosed with cancer. Although she briefly went into remission, the period strained their relationship. Their marriage faltered.

Enter Madhuri Dixit

Director Ramesh Talwar recalled Sanjay whispering “I love you” around others. He had filed for divorce from Richa by early 1993.

Silence and parting ways

Sanjay and Madhuri’s final film in the ’90s was Mahaanta (1997) they reunited only after 22 years in Kalank (2019). At a Khalnayak 30-year celebration in 2023, director Subhash Ghai teased Sanjay about always looking at Madhuri. Sanjay laughed but said nothing. His silence said it all.
