The Delhi High Court on Thursday questioned Priya Kapur’s petition to file a list of her late husband Sanjay Kapur’s assets and liabilities in a sealed cover. The court adjourned the hearing to Friday for further arguments.
The plea is part of an ongoing inheritance dispute involving Karisma Kapoor’s children, who have claimed a share in their father’s personal assets.
Priya Kapur Seeks Confidentiality
Senior advocate Shyel Trehan, representing Priya Kapur, argued that the asset details contain sensitive financial information. Disclosure in public could cause “irreparable harm,” Trehan said.
“This is a lot of info to be in public. There is also an issue of a possible cybersecurity threat since bank account details are involved,” Trehan added. The plea requested either that the documents be filed under confidentiality obligations or that a “Confidentiality Club” be set up to limit access.

“I am willing to show it to all parties, but request it be held as confidential,” Trehan said. She added that her request would not cause any prejudice to the other parties.
Court Raises Concerns
The bench raised concerns about Priya Kapur’s request. The court said opposing parties need access to asset details to respond properly. “The whole suit cannot be in a sealed cover,” the court observed. It asked how confidentiality could work when Priya Kapur files her written statements, which must include the will. The court also questioned the use of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in a partition suit.
“It may be problematic for the simple reason that, as the alleged beneficiary of the estate, they (Karisma Kapoor’s children) have a right to question the assets disclosed. So, tomorrow, if they have to verify and go about asking what has happened, if they are bound with this confidentiality club, how will they ever defend their case?” the bench asked. The court also asked Trehan if there was any judgment supporting her request. Trehan said she would provide suggestions at the next hearing.

Other Parties Seek Access
Counsel for Karisma Kapoor’s children argued that asset details should largely remain public. They also claimed that, according to their information, “banks have been wiped off,” leaving nothing in the accounts.
Senior advocate Amit Sibal, representing Sanjay Kapur’s mother and class 1 heir, stressed that he must see all asset details to verify the will independently. He described NDAs and restrictions as “somewhat unusual” and sought assurance that his rights would not be affected.
Rani Kapur also filed an application seeking a copy of the Will dated March 21, 2025.
