Amitabh Bachchan, the “Shahenshah of Bollywood,” has delivered countless memorable performances over the years. While everyone remembers Sholay, Don, and Piku, many of his films that were really close to his heart have been lost to time. These lesser-known gems prove his range, depth, and emotional fortitude as an actor. Here are ten Amitabh Bachchan films that didn’t receive the shine they deserved but totally deserve a rewatch.

1. Saudagar (1973)

Before he became the angry young man, Amitabh acted a soulful role in Saudagar. The movie is based on a poor vendor of jaggery who gets greedy for money and ultimately loses his moral ground. It might not have been a box office hit, but Saudagar impeccably captures the simplicity of rural India and the plight of human emotions.

2. Alaap (1977)

Alaap showcases Amitabh Bachchan in an entirely new avatar that of a sensitive man who holds music above all else. He portrays Alok, a lawyer’s son who abandons a comfortable existence to pursue his love for singing. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Alaap continues to be one of his most artful and overlooked performances.

3. Bemisal (1982)

Bemisal is a tale of friendship, sacrifice, and envy. Amitabh features as a physician who secretly assists his buddy at immense personal expense. The emotional depth and ethical dilemmas of the movie make it unforgettable. Bachchan’s performance as a selfless individual torn between inner guilt and love is among his best performances. A movie every Bachchan fan needs to see once again.

4. Jurmana (1979)

In Jurmana, Amitabh Bachchan portrays a haughty architect who attempts to woo a simple woman before discovering the beauty of true love and remorse. Under the direction of Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the movie portrays a delicate romantic drama replete with emotional sophistication. Jurmana is the change of heart of a man who discovers that charm cannot substitute for real feelings.

5. Main Azaad Hoon (1989)

Based on the Hollywood film Meet John Doe, this Tinnu Anand-directed film features Amitabh as a jobless youth who fakes being a revolutionary. What started as a publicity stunt becomes a strong movement. The film questions reality, morality, and manipulation by media and politics. Amitabh’s speech in the last scene continues to be one of his strongest moments on screen. Although Main Azaad Hoon was a box office disaster.

Bachchan’s sensitive performance brings sorrow, hope, and dignity on screen. Alongside Hema Malini, the movie touches hearts, reminding viewers of sacrifices made by parents.

7. Mohabbatein (2000)

Amitabh is seen as stern principal Narayan Shankar in this romantic drama. He is a disciplinarian at Gurukul but comes to realize the strength of love through new pupils. His authoritative screen presence coupled with a gentle metamorphosis is memorable. Mohabbatein is renowned for its music, romance, and Amitabh’s portrayal of a mentor figure. It is commonly recalled for the cast of players, but Bachchan’s performance warrants a dedicated viewing.

8. Bhootnath (2008)

Amitabh acts as a benevolent ghost in this family entertainer. His timing and warmth ensure all ages enjoy the film. Bhootnath brings a lighter side of Amitabh, with humor, emotion, and fantasy mixed up. Though remembered as a kid’s movie, the depth he adds to the character is amazing. It’s a lesser-known film that proves his versatility.

9. Suryavansham (1999)

In Suryavansham, Amitabh portrays a strict father and his own son in a double role. The plot is family pride, values, and love conquering misunderstandings. The double role portrayed by Amitabh reveals his vast range and commitment. Although remembered for a few of the classic dialogues and sequences, the movie is worthy of another look due to its emotional and moral orientation.

10. Kabhi Kabhie (1976)

Kabhi Kabhie is remembered for its songs but not the film itself for its emotional narration. Amitabh portrays a poet whose lost love still influences his life years later. Yash Chopra-directed Kabhi Kabhie is a film that delves into love, marriage, and destiny. Bachchan’s restrained, mature performance gives depth to a film that beautifully demonstrates the way past love can influence subsequent relationships. With poetic dialogue and classic timeless songs, Kabhi Kabhie is a must-watch classic.
