Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council meeting will be held in the coming two days i.e. 3rd and 4th September, 2025 to ponder upon major reforms that may redefine the cost structure of consumer electronics and other goods in India. The government is exploring a simplified GST design that would consolidate the present four-slab tax regime (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%) into a simpler two-slab regime of 5% and 18% (40% slab speculated as well). The change is expected to cut GST rates on a range of major electronics products like air conditioners, TVs, and mobile phones by as much as 10% or more, particularly for high-value segments.

Existing GST Rates And Projected Changes

Most electronics items currently face a 28% GST rate that the reform has set to reduce to 18%. The revised rates should make high-end consumer durables cheaper at just the right time during the festive season, come Diwali 2025. For example, a Rs 1.2 lakh smartphone could become about 10% cheaper after the implementation of GST reform.

In the same regard, heavy appliances such as refrigerators and ACs are expected to experience a considerable tax burden reduction, translating to substantive price decreases for consumers. The electrical industry and online shopping platforms are gearing up for a demand boost once the new GST rates have been agreed upon and implemented.

Consumer Behaviour Prior to GST Reforms

However, the build-up for GST reform has seen many consumers take the “wait-and-watch” route in the last few weeks, resulting in a temporary sales dip, especially in high-end electronics and home appliances. Analysts put this GST uncertainty at between 25-30% of a decline in high-ticket purchases.

Retailers and online shopping websites are grappling with high inventory levels as consumers delay purchases hoping for a price reduction after GST reform. This break, while disruptive in the short term, is largely viewed as a brief respite before a solid recovery as the dust settles on the new GST configuration and festive season buying begins. Should You Buy Now or Wait? From a consumer point of view, whether to buy electronics now or wait is based on personal urgency and willingness to accept short-term price movements.

Those who require gadgets or appliances urgently might get bargains now, as a few sellers provide discounts to deplete stock before the GST changes. However, for customers who are willing to wait until after the GST Council decision and subsequent implementation over the next few weeks, most probably ahead of Diwali, prices are likely to be even more suitable because of the lower tax rates, enhancing affordability.

Conclusion: Timing Your Electronics Purchase

In summary, the new GST reforms that are on the horizon will be relaxing the tax burden on electronics, cutting consumer prices significantly. Others who have the means to procrastinate and postpone their own electronics purchases should possibly wait until the reforms kick in, whereas the early birds should consider comparing current market offers with the probable near-future price adjustments.

The GST Council meeting will be pivotal in ascertaining these changes, paving the way for a new market dynamic as India enters the festive shopping season with possibly reduced GST rates on electronics. This scenario presents the possibility of a strategy of strategic patience winning for consumers looking to make large purchases in the electronics space during the GST reform phase and festival sales boom.
