Chandigarh is set to implement a digital summons system. This means that employees will no longer deliver physical summons to people’s homes, instead, summons will be sent directly to individuals’ phones.

The new system will use an e-summon app, which has been developed and is currently undergoing trial runs. Employees have been trained to ensure the smooth operation of this new process. Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to officially launch the system during his visit in August.

How the app will work
When a summons is issued by the court, it will be uploaded to the e-summon app by the court staff. A copy of the summons will then be sent to the accused’s mobile number via WhatsApp and a mobile link. A second copy will be sent to the concerned summons officer, who will verify the receipt by calling the receiver of the summon. If there are any issues, assistance from telecom providers will be sought.

No excuse for non-receipt
Previously, issues arose when court employees either concealed their identity or refused to deliver summons, leading to delays in court proceedings. The new system aims to eliminate such problems by ensuring that summons are delivered with just one click. This approach also addresses instances of mistreatment of employees, as all interactions will be handled digitally.
