Director General of Police (DGP) Umesh Mishra opted for Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) on Friday, prompting the issuance of an official order accepting his retirement. The additional charge of DGP for the state has been assigned to DG (Home Guard) UR Sahu.
Mishra, who was appointed as DGP by the Gehlot government in November 2022, cited personal reasons for his unexpected decision. Notably, he still had eleven months left in his tenure, scheduled to retire in November 2024.
Umesh Mishra, known for his significant role in combating terrorist organisations and handling high-profile cases like the Bhanwari Devi murder case during his tenure as ADG in ATA-SOG and IG of Jodhpur Range, had been appointed during Ashok Gehlot’s term.
The sudden development has sparked speculation in political circles, with discussions underway at the police headquarters regarding the potential replacement for the new DGP. With Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma away on a visit to Delhi, the announcement of the new DGP’s name is anticipated upon his return. The name of DG (Law and Order) Rajiv Sharma is reportedly at the forefront of the discussions for the position.
