The Delhi High Court on Thursday ordered former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to provide alimony of Rs 1.5 lakh per month to his estranged wife, Payal Abdullah.
On April 26, 2018, a trial court had granted Rs 75,000 as maintenance to Payal Abdullah and Rs. 25,000 per month to their son till the age of 18.
In July 2018, Payal Abdullah sought an increase in the maintenance, prompting her appeal to the High Court. Justice Subramanium Prasad pronounced the verdict on Payal Abdullah’s appeal, directing Omar Abdullah to provide an enhanced monthly alimony. The High Court also mandated that Omar Abdullah make a monthly payment of 60,000 rupees for their son’s education.
Payal Abdullah contended before the Court that the previously granted alimony was inadequate to support their son’s education.
Omar Abdullah’s divorce plea had been dismissed in 2016, with the Court determining that he failed to establish irretrievable breakdown of marriage or cruelty as grounds. He challenged this decision in the High Court.
