In a shocking event in China’s Hubei province, a 20-year-old third-year university student delivered a 4.5kg baby in her dormitory bunk bed after attempting to finish her final exams first, according to a report. The unusual incident has made headlines online across the board, particularly over the student’s unassuming resolve.
Roommate Shaken Awake
The student had gone into labour late at night, which woke up her roommate who was disturbed by the pungent odor of blood. “I was woken up and she was in so much pain. The quilt under her was totally soaked with blood,” she explained to the media. Emergency services were soon alerted, but when they arrived, the baby had already been given birth in the dorm room.
Not Her First Child?
What shocked responders even more was the roommate’s calm explanation to medics: “This isn’t her first time giving birth. She already has a child, so she was quite composed.” The revelation drew criticism from the attending doctor, who questioned why the student’s family allowed her to stay in a dorm while heavily pregnant and without proper care.
Doctors Amazed at Size of Baby and Mom’s Condition
The medical staff characterized the condition as highly risky. The student experienced serious blood loss and tearing, conditions aggravated by stress and inactivity during pregnancy. The 4.5kg baby was categorized as a ‘giant baby’, a description used by physicians because of its size.
Why She Stayed in Dorm Despite Labour
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, the student later clarified why she did not rush to the hospital. “I didn’t think the baby would arrive so soon,” she said. “Everyone was asleep when I experienced stomach pain. I thought I had time and would head to the hospital in the morning but labour moved really, really fast.”
Following timely medical attention, the child and mother are both said to be in stable condition, with hospital officials managing to stop the bleeding and ensure their recovery.
