An elephant stomped two brothers to death in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, authorities reported on Saturday.

The event occurred at Kersai village, within the Tapkara forest range. The two, Kokde (45) and Padva (43), were killed by a wild elephant early Saturday, according to authorities.

According to forest officials, the two were asleep in their mud hut when they were attacked by a wild elephant at 3 a.m. Saturday.

“One of the brothers woke up, sensed the elephant’s presence, and went outside to look when the elephant grabbed him with its trunk and trampled him to death. The second brother was killed while trying to save his brother,” stated an officer.

According to an official who is aware of the situation, forest and police authorities raced to the location as soon as they received information. They retrieved two bodies and transported them for autopsies.

According to the official, an ex-gratia of Rs.25,000 has been declared for the relatives of the deceased, with the remainder compensation to be handed after the relevant processes are completed.

Another official stated that forest officers and volunteers have been monitoring elephant movements, alerting villagers, and advising them to exercise caution in the area due to previous human-elephant conflicts, with herds of elephants roaming the Tapkara area for the past six months.

Human-elephant conflict has been a major worry in northern Chhattisgarh for the past decade, hurting districts such as Surguja, Raigarh, Korba, Surajpur, Jashpur, and Balrampur, according to the official.
