Chandigarh Smart City Limited hosted a two-day study tour for a delegation from Bhubaneshwar Municipal Corporation and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to highlight the city’s non-motorized transport (NMT) and cycling infrastructure. The visit aimed at fostering an exchange of knowledge and best practices in sustainable urban mobility.

Anisha Shrivastav, IAS, Additional Chief Executive Officer of Chandigarh Smart City Limited, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Manoranjan Sahu, Deputy Commissioner (Sanitation), Daniel Moser, India Transport Director at GIZ, and all delegates for the collaborative knowledge-sharing session.

A round of discussion was held where the team from Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL), Bhubneshwar Municipal Corporation (BMC), and GIZ presented information about their cities’ cycling infrastructure. The best practices of CSCL, such as launching the project in a phased manner and adopting a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode of implementation, were appreciated by the BMC and GIZ team.

The city has strategically implemented approximately 227 km of cycle tracks over the past five years along the V-8 roads, ensuring a segregated Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) lane on each sector dividing road (V3). This eco-friendly project has notably reduced pedestrian-vehicle conflicts and minimized fatalities. Executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the project showcases the power of collaboration.

GIZ, known for providing technical assistance, is actively supporting government agencies. The study tour was planned to enable Bhubaneshwar Municipal Corporation to gain insights from Chandigarh’s successful urban mobility implementations under the Smart Cities Mission.

Site visits were planned to key locations such as Urban Park, Underpass Sector 17, Public Bike Sharing Sites, and the Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) to provide a deeper understanding and insights into these projects
