The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officially registered an FIR against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. The investigation stems from allegations of corruption, and the CBI launched its probe after the High Court’s single bench ordered them to take up the case.

On Saturday morning, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Calcutta High Court delivered crucial documents related to the case to the CBI office at Nizam Palace. Acting promptly, the CBI filed the FIR and submitted a copy to the Alipur Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court the same day. The investigation is now underway, with CBI officials confirming that further actions will depend on the evidence gathered.

In parallel, a team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi arrived in Kolkata to conduct polygraph tests on Dr. Sandip Ghosh and others linked to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The Calcutta High Court had granted the CBI permission to carry out these tests. The polygraph tests will involve Dr. Ghosh, Sanjay Roy, the main accused, four other doctors, and one volunteer.

The High Court has set a deadline of three weeks for the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is due on September 17. Meanwhile, the case has drawn significant attention and led to increased security measures. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ordered that security at RG Kar Medical College be transferred to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in response to the ongoing unrest in West Bengal. The CISF’s deployment aims to bolster security and help maintain public order amidst the heightened tensions in the state.

Protests have erupted across West Bengal following the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor, whose body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Doctors from multiple institutions, including Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and Indira Gandhi Hospital, participated in a strike to protest the incident.

However, the Supreme Court intervened, urging the medical community to return to work. Following the Court’s appeal, the Resident Doctors Association of Indira Gandhi Hospital officially called off its 11-day strike. On Thursday, other hospitals, including AIIMS and Ram Manohar Lohia, also ended their protests. The Supreme Court assured the doctors that it would prevail upon authorities to avoid taking adverse action against them once they resumed their duties.

As investigations continue, the case remains under intense scrutiny. The deployment of CISF personnel at RG Kar Medical College underscores the seriousness of the situation, and all eyes are now on the progress of the CBI’s investigation and the outcome of the polygraph tests. The court’s ongoing oversight ensures that the investigation remains on track, with the next update expected by September 17.
