Tel Aviv: In a major development in West Asia, Israel has agreed to a ceasefire with Lebanon, which is expected to take effect immediately.
Israel’s Security Cabinet, the government’s top decision-making body, has reportedly approved the ceasefire, according to a report by Reuters.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based militant group backed by Iran, has persisted for several months. Hezbollah has launched numerous rocket and projectile attacks on Israel over the past year, prompting retaliatory strikes from Tel Aviv. The group has been an ally of Hamas, another Iran-backed militant organization.
Israel has been at war with Hamas since October 2023, following a breach of the Israel-Gaza border during which Hamas militants took Israeli hostages at a concert. This triggered a full-scale conflict in Gaza and beyond, resulting in widespread destruction and the loss of tens of thousands of lives across the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Security Cabinet have reportedly agreed to the temporary ceasefire. A formal confirmation from Lebanon regarding the agreement is still awaited.
