Meta Expands in India Amid Layoffs, Opens 41 New Jobs in Bengaluru

Meta, the social media behemoth, is setting up a new building in Bengaluru, according to TechCrunch. This comes after the firm laid off some 5% of its employees in a move that mostly involved those classified as “low performers.”

Focus on Enterprise Engineering

According to the report, the new center in Bengaluru will be part of Meta’s Enterprise Engineering team that focuses on creating bespoke internal tools instead of contributing to Meta’s mass market platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Meta’s Presence in India

Meta currently has several offices in India, with operational offices in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurugram, New Delhi, and Mumbai. These offices, however, do not have many job vacancies and are primarily in non-engineering functions.

Meta hiring for 41 Roles in Bengaluru

Even as there is a wider slowdown in recruitment, Meta is aggressively hiring for 41 roles at its Bengaluru campus, according to its careers portal. The majority of these job postings were made in the last month.

These are largely software engineering and machine learning roles, with some targeted specifically at chip design for Meta’s data centers.

Leadership Recruitment in India

Also, Meta is looking for an “experienced Engineering Director to develop and lead our engineering organization in India,” as per one of its LinkedIn job listings quoted in the report.

Meta’s Move Towards Engineering in India

While these 41 roles are a mere fraction of Meta’s 1,700 worldwide job listings, this step is a strategic move. Meta has not significantly depended on India as an engineering base in the past, so this growth is a significant development.
