Golden Globes: India’s Payal Kapadia loses Best Director award to Brady Corbet

The 2025 Golden Globes concluded on a disappointing note for Indian fans, as India’s ‘All We Imagine As Light’ did not win any of the awards for which it was nominated. Payal Kapadia, the director of the film, lost the Best Director award to Brady Corbet, known for “The Brutalist.” She faced stiff competition from notable directors including Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Corbet (The Brutalist), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).

‘All We Imagine As Light’ was nominated for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture

Additionally, ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was nominated for Best Non-English Language Motion Picture but did not secure the win, with Emilia Perez taking home the trophy in that category.

Despite the setbacks, Payal Kapadia was seen celebrating the achievements of other winners with a smile. She attended the ceremony dressed in a handwoven silk black jumpsuit with a vibrant red accent, designed by Payal Khandwala.

The film features a talented cast, including Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Anand Sami, and Hridhu Haroon. It is currently available for streaming on Disney + Hotstar. The narrative centers around Prabha, a troubled nurse who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her young roommate who is exploring intimacy with her boyfriend. Their journey to a beach town prompts them to confront their desires.

‘All We Imagine As Light’ made its debut at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it was part of the prestigious ‘competition section’ on May 23, marking the first Indian film to be featured in this segment in 30 years. The last Indian film to achieve this was Shaji N Karun’s Swaham in 1994.

In December, a significant milestone was reached in Indian cinema when Payal Kapadia became the first Indian director to receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director. Although she did not win at the Golden Globes, her nomination for ‘All We Imagine As Light’ was a source of pride for many in India.

Reacting to her nomination, Payal expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m deeply honoured by this nomination and grateful to the HFPA for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India, All We Imagine as Light is still in theatres—please go watch it and support us!”

Reflecting on India’s presence at the Golden Globes, in 2023, the song “Naatu Naatu” from SS Rajamouli’s RRR won the award for Best Original Song-Motion Picture, although the Telugu blockbuster lost to Argentina, 1985 in the Best Picture-Non English category.

The 2025 Golden Globe Awards were broadcast in the US on Sunday night and streamed live in India on Monday via Lionsgate Play.
