As Mumbai continues to experience an air quality crisis, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday deployed an anti-smog gun at Marine Drive to control dust.
As per the latest data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the overall air quality today in Mumbai was recorded in the ‘Moderate’ category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 142 against 127 recorded on Monday morning.
Earlier on Sunday, the dust suppression vehicles were deployed in eight locations namely Worli Sea Face, Haji Ali, Pedder Road, Girgaum Chowpatty, Nariman Point, Fashion Street, Badhwar Park and World Trade Centre.
A jogger at Marine Drive blamed the rising level of dust on the construction in the city.
“It’s getting worse day by day. After jogging we can feel conjunction in the chest, it is all due to construction work so it’s good BMC is using anti-smog across the city,” he said.
As per BMC’s new air quality guidelines, dust mitigation measures at construction sites, including government projects, deployment of anti-smog guns on 60 major roads, and expert evaluation of sources of pollution such as refineries and fertiliser units will be undertaken to fight air pollution in the city.
The air quality in Mumbai on Tuesday last week was recorded in the ‘moderate’ category with an air quality index of 115.
Earlier this month, Mumbai was recording air quality under the ‘good category’. However, the city witnessed a rise in the heat with an average daily maximum temperature ranging from 32 to 34 degrees for a week resulting in air quality slipping to the moderate category.
