Addressing the issue of inconsistent doctor attendance causing delays in Mumbai hospitals’ morning outpatient department (OPD) schedules, a new biometric fingerprint system has been implemented in four major civic-run hospitals. Doctors are now required to use biometric verification for attendance logging upon entering and leaving the workplace, directly linking their records to their salary. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a directive mandating biometric attendance for OPD doctors starting at 8:00 am, aiming to streamline processes and eliminate patient congestion. On the first day, OPDs experienced a significant reduction in crowding, and the move is expected to enhance transparency and reduce queues. However, concerns have been raised about senior doctors maintaining personal clinics and potentially burdening junior resident doctors. The BMC has promised to investigate and take action if such allegations are proven. The initiative aims to ensure doctors’ timely approach to professional responsibilities and improve overall healthcare service efficiency in Mumbai municipal hospitals.
