A senior official confirmed that Bengaluru had its first reported death due to dengue on Saturday since January, amidst a recent increase in cases. The 27-year-old resident of CV Raman Nagar, who was the victim of a vector-borne disease, passed away.
Earlier, the city had reported two suspected dengue-related deaths on Friday, leading authorities to initiate a death audit today to ascertain the precise causes.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Health Officer Dr Syed Sirajuddin Madni informed, “He was admitted at Manipal Hospital on June 25 with a history of fever and died on June 27 due to severe dengue with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.”
Furthermore, according to the official, an 80-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu, who had previously battled breast and colon cancer, showed symptoms of dengue but did not succumb to the illness.
He added, “We have received reports. Out of the two suspected deaths due to dengue, one has been confirmed and it is the first case of dengue death in Bengaluru since January.”
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, noting the increase in dengue cases statewide, directed officials on Tuesday to focus on identifying and treating the viral infection as a priority.
Since January, Bengaluru has recorded 1,743 instances of dengue, with the entire state reporting 5,374 cases and five fatalities by June 24, according to information from the chief minister’s office.
