Ahead of the final Test between India and Australia in the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy at Sydney, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with the players from both teams and shared two pictures on social media to mark the occasion on the first day of 2025.

In another post, he highlighted the upcoming 5th Test, stating, “When the fifth test starts on Friday, the SCG will be a sea of pink in support of the great work of the McGrath Foundation. Go Australia!”
Albanese and his fiancée, Jodie Haydon, had also hosted a New Year’s reception at Kirribilli House on Wednesday.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Albanese humorously commented on India’s fast-bowling spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, who has claimed 30 wickets from four matches in the series. “We could pass a law here that says he has to bowl left-handed or off one step. Every time he has come onto bowl has been very exciting,” Albanese said, as reported by NDTV.
The much-anticipated 5th Test between the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team and the Pat Cummins-led Australian team will begin on January 3, 2025, at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground. This match will determine whether India can secure a spot in the World Test Championship finals, with India needing to win to keep their hopes alive. Australia currently leads the series 2-1, following a draw in Brisbane.
While India has several scenarios to qualify for the WTC 2025 finals, the competition is fierce between India, Australia, and Sri Lanka, who are currently the top contenders after South Africa.
