Hajipur, with its history, is still a thriving city today. It serves as the headquarters of the Vaishali district, globally renowned for its bananas, mangoes, and lychees.
Hajipur is located approximately 10 kilometres from the capital city, Patna, and is the second-fastest developing city after Patna itself.
The Lok Sabha seat of Hajipur was previously considered the stronghold of the late leader Ram Vilas Paswan, who contested and won elections from this constituency ten times. Currently, Lok Janshakti Party (National) leader Pashupati Kumar Paras represents this seat in Parliament.
However, the political journey of Pashupati Kumar Paras has faced challenges, especially after the upheaval in LJP. The uncle-nephew duo, Pashupati Kumar Paras and Chirag Paswan are now political rivals. Despite the split in LJP, both factions are currently aligned with the NDA.
Pashupati Paras, a prominent figure, serves as the Minister of Food Processing Industries in the Modi cabinet. He won his first election from Alauli Vidhan Sabha in 1977 and continued to represent the constituency six times consecutively until 2005. After facing defeats in the 2010 and 2015 assembly elections, he emerged victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Hajipur.
The Hajipur Lok Sabha seat, initially reserved for Scheduled Castes in 1977, witnessed political dominance by Ram Vilas Paswan. Paswan faced only two defeats, in 1984 to Congress candidate Ramratna Ram and 2009 to JDU candidate Ramsundar Das.
In the 2019 elections, Ram Vilas Paswan sent his brother Pashupati Paras to the Lok Sabha from Hajipur. The seat witnessed its first election in 1952, dominated by Congress until 1971. However, the scenario changed after 1977, with Ram Vilas Paswan established his influence.
Having entered politics with the JP movement, Ram Vilas Paswan recorded consecutive victories from this seat. His remarkable wins even earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Despite the rapid development in Hajipur, casteism plays a significant role, with Yadav voters holding sway on this seat. Rajputs, Bhumihars, Kushwahas, and Paswans also have a considerable presence. The Scheduled and Extremely Backward Communities play a crucial role in influencing the election outcomes.
The 2024 general elections will be significant for Hajipur as it will be the first without the presence of Ram Vilas Paswan. The split in LJP has created two factions, one led by Chirag Paswan and the other by Pashupati Kumar Paras, both aligning with the NDA.
Hajipur has seen progress, especially in urban areas, but the basic infrastructure in rural and farming regions remains weak. The connectivity from Patna to Hajipur has improved, contributing to the overall development of the region.
With approximately 19 lakh voters in the Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency, the electorate will scrutinize the work of their representative before the elections. India News is also conducting precise surveys to gauge public opinion, adding to the anticipation of the 2024 elections in Hajipur.
