Taiwanese Surgeon Performs a Vasectomy on Himself, Ignites Online Debate

A Taiwanese plastic surgeon, Chen Weinong, has sparked controversy after performing a vasectomy on himself, calling it a “gift” to his wife. The procedure, which he shared in a video on January 9, has gained over 4 million views online, igniting discussions across social media.

Chen, a specialist in eyelid, nose, and breast augmentation surgeries, previously worked with burn patients before opening his own plastic surgery clinic in Taipei. As a father of three, he decided to undergo a vasectomy due to his and his wife’s ages.

Confident in his own skills, Chen recorded himself performing the procedure while explaining its 11 steps, including locating the sperm duct, administering anesthesia, making the incision, tying off the duct, and suturing the wound. Sitting cross-legged, he provided commentary throughout, at one point exclaiming, “Oh, this is super sore!” and later remarking, “This feels so weird.”

Although a typical vasectomy takes around 15 minutes, Chen’s self-surgery took over an hour, leaving him exhausted. He admitted to experiencing pain that night but reported significant relief by the following morning.

Reactions

The video has triggered mixed reactions online. Some netizens questioned Chen’s qualifications as a plastic surgeon performing a urological procedure. In response, Chen defended himself, stating that he holds a surgical license and performed the operation with the supervision of a urologist, a nurse, and three doctors.

“The procedure was fully self-funded and conducted at a legally authorized location,” he clarified. The Taipei City Health Department confirmed his qualifications, affirming that there were no legal issues, as reported by Taiwanese media outlet FTV News. A local official also mentioned that it is not uncommon for male doctors to perform their own vasectomies.

Despite the success of his self-procedure, Chen urged the public not to imitate him. “Performing a vasectomy at home is extremely dangerous. I strongly recommend consulting a professional urologist,” he warned.

The video has been shared over 100,000 times, sparking both praise and concern. Some viewers praised Chen’s commitment, with one commenting, “You are very thoughtful. Recovery from male sterilization is much quicker than for females.” Others expressed apprehension about untrained individuals attempting the procedure, saying, “Please consult a professional doctor, the surgery is not expensive and really quick.”
