A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, killing over 700 worshippers during Ramadan prayers, according to a Myanmar Muslim organization. The quake caused massive destruction, collapsing mosques and trapping people under debris.
Widespread Damage to Mosques
Tun Kyi, a member of the Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network, reported that around 60 mosques suffered damage or complete destruction. Many of these structures were old and vulnerable to earthquakes. Videos from The Irrawaddy news site showed mosques toppling as terrified people ran for safety.
Rising Death Toll and Missing Persons
The military-led government confirmed that the death toll has surpassed 1,700. Authorities have pulled more bodies from the rubble, increasing the number of injured to 3,400. Over 300 people remain missing. However, officials did not clarify whether the 700 worshippers were included in the official count.
Infrastructure Collapse and Relief Challenges
The earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, damaging buildings, roads, and the city’s airport. Relief operations face major obstacles due to broken roads, collapsed bridges, and poor communication networks. The ongoing civil war further complicates rescue efforts.
Impact in Thailand
The earthquake’s tremors reached neighboring Thailand, shaking much of the country. In Bangkok, a partially built high-rise collapsed, killing at least 18 people.
