Major 7.1 Earthquake Hits Nepal; Xizang Faces Ongoing Seismic Activity

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Tuesday morning, with tremors felt in nearby Xizang, Tibet. Multiple aftershocks followed, including a 5.0 quake, but no casualties have been reported so far.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale struck Lobuche, Nepal, on Tuesday morning. The tremor occurred 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche at 6:35 AM (IST), as reported by the USGS Earthquakes.

Aftershocks in Xizang (Tibet)

Meanwhile, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported several aftershocks in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), China. The first aftershock, also of magnitude 7.1, occurred at 6:35 AM IST, with a depth of 10 kilometers. NCS confirmed the quake’s details: “EQ of M: 7.1, On: 07/01/2025 06:35:18 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 87.51 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xizang.”

Following this, two smaller earthquakes were recorded. At 7:02 AM IST, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers. Then, at 7:07 AM IST, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck at a depth of 30 kilometers.

Tremors Felt in Bihar

The tremors were also felt in Bihar’s Sheohar district, near the Nepal-China border. Residents in both Nepal and Tibet were urged to evacuate their homes and seek safety in open spaces.

Residents Share Their Experiences

Meera Adhikari, a local resident, explained, “I was sleeping when the earthquake hit. At first, I thought my child was shaking the bed. But when the window shook, I realized it was an earthquake. I quickly called my child and evacuated the house.”

Another resident, Biplov Adhikari, shared his experience: “I was in the toilet when I felt the door shaking. I rushed outside when I realized it was an earthquake.”

No Casualties Reported

As of now, there are no reports of damage or casualties. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and more updates are expected soon.
