Bangladesh’s Election Date Set for December 2025 by BNP

The Bangladesh National Party (BNP) stated that the upcoming general elections will be held in December 2025 under a caretaker government. This announcement came after a discussion between BNP officials and the chief adviser in Dhaka.

Since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s removal from office in August 2024, Bangladesh has been governed by an interim administration.

Over the last 30 years, the reigns of power have been shared by the BNP and Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League.

According to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, they anticipate Yunus to soon present a plan for the elections. “We have once again pressed them on this matter, Alamgir said. “He (Yunus) told us that they are working to hold the election by December.

Although, this announcement, the BNP has still been advocating for an earlier election. Alamgir proposed last month that elections would happen between July and August 2025, a time frame that is closer to-day than Yunus’s earlier suggestions between the end of 2025 and, mid-2026.

On both sides of the political spectrum, major demonstrations against the authorities will be organised. The Awami League is making arrangements for rallies on February 10, blockade on February 16 and hartals after two days. In the meantime, the BNP is planning demonstrations in all the 64 districts on February 11.
