“Nellore Mayor Sravanthi Resigns from YSR Congress Party Amid Electoral Setback”
Nellore Mayor Sravanthi tendered her resignation from the YSR Congress Party on Monday, following the party’s significant losses in both the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Parliament elections. Sravanthi cited pressure to remain in the party after her mentor, Sridhar Reddy, a current TDP MLA, departed from the YSRCP in 2023.

Expressing gratitude towards Reddy, Sravanthi emphasized his role in her political journey, stating, “Sridhar Reddy gave me the corporator ticket despite lack of political background. He also made me the mayor. Many activists, like us, were given political opportunities because of him. He gave me courage in politics.”

She further revealed the pressure from YSRCP leaders to criticize Reddy upon his departure, expressing a desire for his forgiveness.

The YSRCP’s performance in the elections witnessed a significant decline, securing only 11 Assembly seats, down from the 151 won in 2019, and four Lok Sabha seats out of 25. Meanwhile, the TDP, led by Chandrababu Naidu, is set to assume power in Andhra Pradesh, reflecting a shift in the political landscape attributed, in part, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s influence.
