Karnataka’s deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, announced on Friday that all of the incident’s perpetrators have been detained and that no one will be spared at all, despite the BJP preparing a statewide protest over the stripping and parading incident at Belagavi. A 42-year-old mother in the Belagavi district was reportedly involved in an egregious event when her son eloped with another woman, leading to her being undressed, beaten, and humiliated.
The deputy chief minister added, “After learning of the incident, our government sprang into action,” in an interview with ANI on Friday. We have taken all of the offenders into jail. There is no need to shelter or protect anyone because the law will take its course. The Congress is dedicated to guaranteeing the protection of women throughout the nation.”
State Home Minister G Parameshwara had earlier stated, “It is an unfortunate incident.” in reference to the incident. Around 24, a boy from the same village and community fell in love with a girl and fled. The girl’s parents allegedly grabbed his mother, stripped her naked, and tied her to an electric pole after discovering the son had departed.”
On Friday, the state administration received a notice regarding the Belagavi incident from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The committee resolved to send a fact-finding team to the district and requested a report on the actions taken in the case from the Congress government within four weeks.
“The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report carried on December 12, 2023, that a 42-year-old woman was stripped, paraded naked, tied to an electric pole and assaulted at Hosa Vantamuri village, Belagavi district, Karnataka, after her son eloped with a girl from the same village,” the panel stated in an official release.
The panel stated that the contents of the news report, if true, do point to a serious violation of the victim’s human rights. “The purported act, as reported, seems to have a stereotyped patriarchal approach, which is a clear demonstration of the violation of the right to life and dignity of the victim. It is the duty of the state to safeguard vulnerable sections of society, especially women, children, elderly persons and people,” the NHRC stated in the release.
