The air quality in several areas of the national capital is poor. As per the government agencies, an AQI between 0-50 can be categorised as good, 51-100 is known to be satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and 401-500 is severe/hazardous. Thus, this poor air quality will not only take a toll on the lungs or cardiovascular system but even the eyes as well. Here are some essential measures that you need to follow to keep your eyes safe from air pollution. Read on to know more about this, and follow the guidelines without fail.
There is a spike in air pollution in Delhi and surrounding areas. The air is filled with harmful gases and pollutants and makes it difficult for one to breathe freely. The common causes of air pollution are harmful pollutants from the car, firecrackers, industrial waste, and the open burning of agricultural waste. The pollution level in Delhi has reached an emergency leading to potential health hazards. Thus, smog is formed owing to high air pollution. Did you know?. Smog is a thick layer near the ground when air pollution is high. The smog can invite many health problems like nose, throat, lungs, and eyes. Yes, that’s right! Your eyes can get affected due to smog, and you may complain of red and watery eyes and various eye allergies.
Here, we list out a few eye problems due to air pollution or smog: One’s eyes can have a tough time during the smog. Common eye problems are watery eyes, a burning sensation or discomfort, sore eyes, redness, and swelling, itchy eyes. Even dry eyes are seen in the majority of people. If you have dry eyes then you will feel that there is some foreign body is lodged in the eye. It will be painful too. Eye allergy is also seen that can lead to blurring vision.

· It will be imperative for you to avoid exposure to harmful pollutions. So, do not venture out of the house when the air quality is poor. If you want to exercise, just do that at home. In case, you are required to go out due to an emergency then just wear protective eyeglasses or sunglasses.
· Do not touch your eyes without washing your hands when you come from outside. Also, avoid rubbing your eyes.
· Do not put rose water or anything else in the eyes without the doctor’s knowledge as the products contain chemicals that can do more harm than good.
· Stay hydrated and drink enough water for adequate tear formation and reduce the chances of dry eyes and irritation.
· Lubricate your eyes with eye drops only after consulting the doctor. Avoid t excessive screen time. Cut down on the usage of mobile phones and laptops as that can further lead to eye problems.
· Schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist, if there are problems like redness, swelling, and watery discharge from the eyes.
