A fast-moving grass fire erupted east of Colorado Springs Airport on Thursday, prompting immediate evacuation orders in several areas. The blaze, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, is threatening Schriever Space Force Base in Ellicott, with firefighters working tirelessly to contain it.
Evacuation Orders Issued
Authorities have ordered evacuations for the following areas:
- Gusty Bluffs Point
- Meridian Road North to Highway 94
- Franceville Coal Mine
- Eastern border of Schriever Space Force Base
A pre-evacuation warning is also in place for areas near Highway 94 and Franceville Coal Mine Road North to Davis Road, extending east to Schriever Space Force Base.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) confirmed that multiple fire units are actively engaged in controlling the flames. However, no official estimate of the fire’s size has been provided yet.
Photos and videos from the scene show thick smoke blanketing the area, making visibility difficult for emergency responders.
Red Flag Warning Issued Before the Fire
Just hours before the fire broke out, the National Weather Service had issued a Red Flag Warning for the Colorado Springs area. The warning, effective from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 13, highlighted strong winds and low humidity, creating perfect conditions for rapid fire spread.
Officials have urged residents to refrain from outdoor burning activities and remain prepared for possible evacuations as the situation unfolds.
Current Situation & Safety Measures
Firefighters continue their efforts to contain the fire, but residents are advised to evacuate immediately if instructed. Those in pre-evacuation areas should stay alert for updates from emergency services.
